Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are delivering a strong, positive message about the importance of recycling and waste management in the province. The successes we have attained this year have been good for the environment, our economy, and our communities.
Here are the highlights for 2008-09:
Over 149 million used beverage containers were recycled through MMSB's province-wide network of Green Depots. That's 10 million more than the year prior and a record high since the programs inception.
More than 14.4 million beverage containers were collected and diverted from landfills throughout Newfoundland and Labrador from over 300 schools province-wide. This is an increase of 2.6 million over last year.
In excess of 120, 000 litres of househould hazardous waste was collected and diverted from our landfills from more than 5300 participating households throughout the province.
Approximately 332, 000 used tires were collected and diverted from waste disposal sites.
A total of $570, 000 was committed through the Waste Management Trust Fund to support the planning and organizational needs of the regional waste management authorities to advance the Provincial Solid Waste Management Strategy at the local level.
Sustained employment within the recycling industry estimated at more than 300 jobs throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.
Since the launch of the Get to Half at School Program, MMSB's waste reduction experts have delivered more than 225 presentations at schools throughout the province impacting over 8,000 youth.
