Our youth are the future of our province, so not only must they help lead environmental change – they should be our motivation for doing so! This year, MMSB is very excited to launch the new revitalized Get to Half at School Program.

Get to Half at School

The new Get to Half at School Program promotes environmental
stewardship within Newfoundland and Labrador’s school system and
provides the tools and resources to bring these practices into the
classroom. With an increased focus on the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – we have revitalized this program (with the input of school focus groups) to empower youth to take greater action to protect our province’s environment.

The new program will help our province’s schools build on their waste diversion and reduction efforts and encourage youth to continue to do their part to keep the province green and healthy. The program will also help the province reach its 50 per cent waste diversion goal as set out in the provincial Waste Management Strategy.

Our Commitment

Students and teachers throughout Newfoundland and Labrador have been dedicated to recycling beverage containers at school for many years – and have seen great results! Last year, over 12.3million beverage containers were diverted from Newfoundland and Labrador’s overburdened landfills – resulting in approximately $1.3 million raised in recycling refunds and matching grants provided by the MMSB. These funds were reinvested in a wide variety of environmental and other educational initiatives within the school system. But there is still lots of work to do!

Beverage Container Recycling

MMSB will provide matching funds (5 cents for non-alcoholic beverage containers and 10 cents for alcoholic beverage containers) to all K to 12 schools participating in the Get to Half at School Program. The MMSB encourages schools to reinvest matching funds into other environmental and educational initiatives. Matching Funds are only paid on recyclables collected throughout the school year (September to June). Matching funds will not be paid on recycling collected throughout the summer months. For more information about the MMSB matching funds at school see recycling beverage containers

Our Focus

In addition to beverage container recycling, the new Get to Half at School Program will focus on educating students, teachers and administrative staff about the importance of waste reduction and reusing materials as a means of protecting the future of Newfoundland and Labrador.
